I have never felt more stress come off my chest than the day I pulled my kids out of public school.  We lived in Northern California at the time. The cost of living and lack of resources meant homeschooling wasn’t an option and homesteading was financially out of the question.

One day, my husband said to me, “If we moved out of California, you wouldn’t even have to work.”

And that was the moment our relocation journey began.

What lay ahead were months of research and several family trips to scope out potential locations around the country.  We had a detailed and specific list of needs, and finding the right fit was like turning our lives upside down to locate a missing puzzle piece.

We needed three things:

✅ Raw land so we could support ourselves financially through our homestead

✅ A supportive homeschool community

✅ Affordable cost of living.

But as we quickly learned, that was just the starting point.

The list of considerations is much longer…

We had to look at other factors that would affect our daily lives and ability to be self-sufficient like:

  • Weather
  • Services
  • Schools/Homeschool law
  • Churches
  • Cost of living
  • Support system

Unfortunately, there was no easy button to help us in our research. Every state had different pros and cons. We had to scour the internet, talk to locals, visit each location, and compile all the information for ourselves—all while navigating a difficult escrow and the ever-demanding VA loan process.

Keeping track of it all was overwhelming, to say the least!

As a family of 8, we’ve completed several relocations over the years, and I’ve gotten the process down to a science!

Now I help other families find their footing, and make the best decision of their lives to work and play side-by-side with their kids on their very own self-sufficient homestead!

If you were wondering how our journey ended, my family and I are settled in Idaho and have a successful Homesteading and Homesteading Education Business where we help other families realize the dream of living and working together on their very own acreage.

Years ago, I could never imagine the freedom of being able to connect with my kids in the daily moments of life as we get our hands dirty, grow our own food, and learn about life the way we were intended to. We are truly living the dream, and I’m grateful for every second.

But none of that would be possible if we hadn’t taken a leap of faith and struck out on the overgrown path of self-sufficiency.

If you’re still weighing your options, wondering if this could really work for you, I’m here to tell you that we still live in a land of great opportunity! You can raise your kids with a strong work ethic, a quality education, and LOTS of love.

The answer just might be a hop, skip, and a jump away.

My Homesteader Relocation Guide will give you the confidence and clarity you need for a fresh perspective and a successful search.
